Tranquil Lake Nursery in Rehoboth, Massachusetts will offer three free garden design workshops on Sunday afternoons in May at 1:00 p.m. These workshops are designed to assist home-owners with some professional guidance in interpreting your own yard, and preparing a plan for making design changes. Using the gardens at Tranquil Lake Nursery, Warren Leach, garden designer and landscape horticulturists will offer basic design suggestions for developing landscapes that balance aesthetics with practicality. Get started on creating a home landscape that works for you.



Sunday, May 6                    Design Basics: Where to Start

Explore ways to create beautiful, sustainable and practical landscapes using basic principles of design: color, line and form. Warren Leach, landscape horticulturist will use examples in the nursery gardens to illustrate the principles that you can take home to your own yard, learn how to assess the existing conditions, including views, microclimates, sun, shade, and wind patterns. You will learn how to analyze your existing site to focus views and solve problems. Leave with a checklist to get started on your own yard.

The entry garden sets a tone of hospitality for your home, and may be more memorable than the best meal. Set the right impression. A welcoming entry to your home can be more than merely a lawn, a tree, and a regimented row of traditional foundation plants. Learn how to designa well-organized entry garden that meets your needs, provides interest and variety year-round and even increases your property value. Warren Leach, Landscape Horticulturist and co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery will offer design tips for creating a landscape that will greet you as you travel from driveway to the front door.


Sunday, May 27                 Getting It Right the First Time: Selecting the Right Plants for Low Maintenance and Long



Avoid costly errors or excess need for pruning by choosing the right plant based on environmental conditions, available space and desired look for your yard. Warren Leach, landscape horticulturist and co-owner of Tranquil Lake Nursery will offer tips for selecting site appropriate trees, shrubs and perennials and creative ways to organize them into combinations that reduce maintenance, look good year-round, and mimic natural landscapes.



At Tranquil Lake Nursery, you will also see more than 8 acres of fields of Siberian Iris and Japanese Iris and daylilies blooming in the fields. The nursery is the largest grower of these beautiful perennials in the northeast, with over 2,000 cultivars of daylilies in our fields. The display gardens showcase the iris and daylilies as well as a diverse selection of perennials, herbs, vines, shrubs, small trees, grasses and tender perennials. All design workshops are free and will be held on Sundays at 1 p.m. (We will move indoors in case of bad weather.) Bring a lawn chair. All plants that are discussed will be available for sale.
