The gardens at Brigham Hill Farm are entered either through the granite slab driveway or down the bluestone walk. Many of the gardens were designed by Warren Leach working closely with the owners over the past twenty years.

Upon entering, one passes roses and other fragrant flowering plants growing on massive old stone walls. Just outside the kitchen, and enclosed by stone walls, is the award winning herb garden that consists of Buxus ‘Vardar Valley’ boxwood hedges, a water feature, perennials and many self seeding annual herbs. This garden is set off seasonally with potted herbs and flowers.

Behind the house is a terrace for entertaining or dining. Three Maackia amurensis (Amur Maackia) surround a mill stone table. Benches, tables and chairs allow ample places to relax and dine.

The perennial gardens consist of several island beds and borders, most of which are edged with granite slabs laid flush with the lawn. A circle of Malus ‘Sugar Tyme’ crabapples trees is trained to create a bower in the garden for s shady sitting area. In one corner of the garden, there is a rustic arbor made from red cedar cut from the property. Here also is a small drip fountain and a rustic set of steps leading to a stone seat where one can view the garden. In another shady corner, there is a Moon garden with mainly white flowering and silver foliaged plants.

Just beyond the perennial garden is the swimming pool. Here containers are planted with annuals for summer color. Thyme and other creeping plants thrive in the bluestone terrace partially surrounded by a border of Pennisetum ‘Hameln’ ornamental grass.

Past the pool area the water / woodland garden begins. A series of ponds and waterfalls cut into the native granite outcropping provide water for plan and animal life. The woodland garden consists of mainly native New England plants. A small semi-circular council ring allows for sitting. Moss is encouraged to grow on the rocks.

A new arboretum of native trees, shrubs and perennial under-story was established a few years ago. Other garden features include raised beds for cut flowers, strawberries, asparagus and vegetables. A chicken coop supports a “green” roof planted with succulents such as hens and chicks. Several caged beds keep avian visitors from feeding on the raspberries, blueberries and blackberries within.

To complete the rural feeling of Brigham Hill Farm are the many shrub borders, native grass meadows and numerous stone walls that act as boundaries, retaining walls and garden features.

Brigham Hill Farm is listed in The Archives of American Gardens managed by the Smithsonian Institution at www.siris.si.edu.

This Garden Tour Support Sherry's House in Worcester. Why Me and Sherry's House have been supporting families of children with cancer since 1985.

ABOUT SHERRY’S HOUSE

For years, Why Me families have dreamed about having a special place, a home dedicated to healing from childhood cancer.  Everything the Why Me organization has been able to do since 1985 to help children and families with childhood cancer is now strengthened with the addition of Sherry’s House.  Sherry’s House is a place where kids and their families from all over New England can come and receive the support and encouragement they need to fight childhood cancer, together.  It proudly serves as Command Central in caring for our over 500 existing Why Me families, providing them with the social, emotional, logistical, educational, and financial support they need, day in and day out, to overcome childhood cancer.

Sherry’s House provides no cost eight bedroom lodging for child cancer patients, their families and caregivers, throughout the cancer treatment process.  Families whose child is receiving their treatment at any Massachusetts hospital come from all over the United States, as well as, Puerto Rico & Canada to stay at Sherry's House.

In addition, Sherry’s House is home to Child and Family Activities and Events: Family Fun Events, social visits, celebrations, mentoring and survivorship programs.  It houses our volunteer programs, Cancer Resource and Research Center, the Children’s Learning Center, and the organizational home of Why Me.

Sherry’s House is our greatest asset in helping comfort and care for children and families, throughout the treatment process and well beyond, greatly increasing our capacity to serve. Read more at http://www.whyme.org/
